Values & Issues

Public Safety for Everyone

Everyone in our city should feel safe.  Kate applauds  the work already being done as part of the “Janet Mann Safe Streets Now” resolution.  If elected, Kate will continue this work by advocating increased safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers by bringing all stakeholders to the table to collaboratively brainstorm solutions.

Additionally, as shown by her work as a prosecutor, Kate understands the importance of trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. This trust is built through:

  • Independent citizen oversight that increases public confidence in the professionalism and accountability of law enforcement.

  • Community Policing: collaboration and relationship-building between law enforcement and the individuals and organizations they serve, to develop solutions to problems and increase trust in police. Notably a few cities (including Surf City, North Carolina and Parker, Colorado) have made great strides in this work and Kate wants to continue the efforts the current administration is making to enhance community safety for EVERYONE in Spokane.

Economy

The cost of living is rising everywhere; Spokane needs City Council members who will voice the needs of ALL members of our community. Working families and small businesses are struggling under the current economic climate, and innovative public policies must be put into practice to help ease their current burden and promote a more prosperous future for Spokane. Supporting apprenticeships, fair wages and smart public safety investments are critical to this effort.

Environment

Spokane has so much to offer as a growing mid-sized city surrounded by beautiful rivers, lakes, and mountains to enjoy all year long. Kate’s concerns for the environment are compelled by her need to make sure everyone can enjoy the healthy and beautiful natural landscapes afforded to us. Her priorities include forward-thinking policies and public education that:

  • Protect and maintain current parks and natural habitats within city limits.
  • Increase awareness of “defensible space” and other proven wildfire prevention and mitigation tactics.
  • Ensure safe drinking water.
  • Protect the Spokane river and the surrounding environment from the ever-increasing effects of climate change.
  • Promote easy and efficient recycling and composting throughout the city.

Equity and Equality

Everyone–no matter where they live, who they love, their gender, or the color of their skin–deserves to be respected and accepted in their community. Kate will be a proud advocate for a safe and inclusive Spokane where everyone is afforded the same freedom and safety, without regard to their identities.

Smart City Planning & Infrastructure

The revived Riverfront Park with its gondolas, ice skating rink, playgrounds, and well-kept trails is a jewel in the center of our city.  Kate will continue this thoughtful planning and innovative development, with the hope of enticing skilled professionals to choose Spokane and elevating the quality of life for those already here.

Housing for All Income Levels

Through her work with Cuidando Los Niños in Albuquerque, Kate has direct experience with the complicated factors that contribute to homelessness. Kate values and wants to expand the current work being done—through law enforcement collaboration with other community organizations—to help the unhoused find solutions and stability in their lives according to their own individual circumstances. There isn’t a single approach that works for every individual. Everyone, whatever their circumstances, deserves respect and community support.
